Perfectly Weak

Perfectly Weak

Every man wants to be seen as strong, right? I mean that is why we go to the gym, or at the very least, why we stand in front of the mirror pushing our biceps up from the bottom. Yes, it is okay to admit it! We have all done it at least once. After all, no one wants to be thought of as a weakling. However, in regards to our relationship with God what if we have that backwards? Is God looking for strong men? I guess that depends on your definition of strong.

“And He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my strength is made perfect in weakness.” II Corinthians 12:9 NKJV

At first glance this verse seems like a contradiction. How can strength be made perfect in weakness? Sometimes we feel that God is nearest to those who seem like spiritual giants, those who are exceptionally gifted and are on the front lines fighting the Lord’s battles. Perhaps a wise pastor or a charismatic evangelist comes to mind when you are picturing the Lord’s heavy lifters. The Apostle Paul paints a different picture. It’s not our strength that brings God the closest, it is our weakness.

Our weakness pulls God away from His throne to sit in our living rooms. Our weakness prompts Him to drop whatever He is doing and immediately come to our aid. As you read the scripture pay close attention to how weakness attracted Jesus. He was always leaving the company of the strong to spend time with those who had little or no strength left. The weak were always calling Him away. We are made strong in times of weakness because of His presence.

If you feel weak, take heart! God is near. Remember, it’s not your strength that will get you through this. It’s His…. It’s okay to be perfectly weak.

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His might power.” Ephesians 6:10 NIV
